Why Can't I Convince You
She screams from the rooftops, yet nobody hears.
She begs at your feet, but you kick her aside
She tries with her intellect, but you won't listen
She tries to heal but you kick her while she's down.

People don't help battered women because they say "well, she stayed" so that person doesn't help her. Then the next person sees that she stayed and they give the same reason for not helping and since nobody was willing to help her she is stuck. Everyone condemns her for staying yet no one sees that they could have changed things in her life for the better but, they do nothing instead.
Great poem! Short but needle sharp to the point. No one should be condemned for staying. Sometimes they stay because, as bad as it might be, they don't know if they could cope living on their own. Sometimes they stay because of the kids. Sometimes they stay because they love their abuser and wait for them to turn back into the person they, obviously, once we're. Sometimes they are conditioned to think it is normal. The list goes on, it's exhaustive. Helping these people can be difficult sometimes but it is NOT impossible if rescuers don't give up.
This poem could just as easily be talking about depression or some other type of mental illness! It is what I thought it was when I first read it. If someone is suffering acutely, this is often the behaviour of those around them. They don't mean to be deliberately horrible... they just don't understand and the person suffering implodes in on themselves.
A very interesting poem which, in my opinion, could be read many ways x
