Why doth the willow weep

A question asked but unresolved
why does the willow weep?
Under pendulous flora mystery
What secrets does it keep?
Does it long for time gone by
Babylonian home
Ancestors proudly stand
Along the old silk road
Does it lament emancipation
Enforced slavery?
Or standing stoic, weeping still
Insist its just a tree
Catkins offspring offered forth
The chance to multiply
Whispers to wind as he rushes past
Hear! I am alive!
Considered life of sorrow
Repeats the question why
Does it bow to masters new
Or weep for Asian sky?

An old Arapaho Indian legend claims that the Weeping Willow weeps because ghosts get trapped beneath the leafy, dangling, vine-like leaves and are unable to escape.
It's also said that on rainy days, if you look closely enough, you can see misty spectral apparitions there.
Well...you did ask, lol...
Nicely penned, Brendan.
