Why War?

Together we build bridges, but then they fall,
The walls, the only thing standing tall.
To love you takes up all my strength,
Yet when I’m with you, I catch my breath.
Your hair, your eyes, mouth and lips,
When we touch our fingertips.
The chemistry shines for all to see,
For who is better for you, than me?
But the fairytale is still a show,
Which children will learn when they grow.
The ache of a broken heart and life,
When you saw us parting, why ask ‘Be my wife’?
For the bridges, the walls, the seas and land,
Make it hard for me to hold your hand.
So when they came to the door,
To tell me you had hit the floor.
Tears over-whelming streamed down my face,
Knowing no-one, nothing could take your place.
Whilst grieving for you, I screamed out loud,
Not really caring who was around.
For the future we planned, you and I,
Just vanished, in the blink of an eye.
While my love, with you, thrown overboard,
The small shreds of my heart ask… ‘Why the war’?!
The cemeteries, graves, headstones in places,
In the way, where we can’t see your faces.
You men fought bravely, as one, together,
We women suffered, as one, together.
Not knowing the next time we’d see you alive,
Or if fate had taken its turn to drive.
You battled with guns, we battled with news,
Yet every Sunday, we all kneel in the pews.
I prayed for your safe return to my side,
Now filled with grief, from God, I must hide.
For I cannot live without you in my life.
We’ll be together soon, in heaven.
Your Wife xx
