Will You Still Linger?

The spare room will be redone,
The king size bed swapped out for a crib.
The art on the walls will be replaced,
With family photos
And finger-painted paper.
You will gradually disappear
From the space you once filled completely,
But I wonder;
Will you still linger?
In the places that you once were,
That I thought you’d always be,
But will never be again.
The music we once danced to
Will be drowned out,
By the sound of laughter
And tiny hurried steps
Echoing through the hall.
My arms,
Which once held you,
Will cradle a life that I have made
With someone else.
You will gradually disappear
From the space you once filled completely,
But I wonder;
Will you still linger?
In the places that you once were,
That I thought you’d always be,
But will never be again.
I’ll drive down the roads we once took,
But when my eyes flick to the rearview mirror I’ll see
Blue instead of brown staring back,
Filled with love.
I will have everything
We dreamed of together,
But I won’t have you.
Will it be enough?
Or will you still linger?
In the places that you once were,
That I thought you’d always be,
But will never be again.
