Chokehold
My gaze falls on his face,Â
But my eyes look right through him,
Searching for you.Â
He is talking to me,
But his words are drowned out
By the echoes of sweet nothings that you once whispered in my ear.
He smiles,
But it’s your laughter that follows,
Ringing through my very being.
He walks with me,
Seeing me safely back to my house,
But you are my home. Â
He follows me up the stairs,
But I can still feel you,
Lingering behind me.
He showers with me,
But as the water rushes over me,
It is thoughts of you I bathe in.
He holds me in bed,
His hands around my waist,
But yours are around my neck.
My vessel is here in his arms,
But my spirit is somewhere else entirely,
Still wrapped up in your chokehold.Â

Great write, Missy. It's haunting, sexy, and heartbreaking all in one. I loved it! M.Â
Thank you very much Matthew! :)
There is one line that stands out for me in this poem and in a way it explains those that precede it and follow it. "My vessel is here in his arms." It suggests the writer, trying desperately to get over a previous experience, can only get so far. Before reading that line and the one preceding it the reader might think it's just that the writer would prefer to be with the other person.Â
But that is not the case at all. You do that brilliantly with your writing. I only found it disturbing even before the revelation at the end.Â
Bernie,
I’m so glad you liked this one. I am always grateful to hear what you have to say! Thank you for your comment x
You are very welcome. Liked might not be right. It is a very convincing piece of poetry. Good to see you back. x
Haha, yes I know what you mean! That’s the thing with writing hey. “Like” or “enjoy” aren’t always the exact words to use. But you understand me nonetheless. It’s good to be back. Sending you well wishes :)x
Thank you for the well wishes. Best wishes to you too. x
