Willows From The South

Willows From The South

The breeze fills up your loins, in the hot of the summer, under the southern willows

Right down the path to my grand dads old mansion, on the hundred plus acres of cotton fields

I can remember my mother, so beautiful, tall, and slender, with wavy auburn hair that glistened in the sun

My parents would put on such lovely parties, we would play tag in the orchard, where we were forbidden

The apples were not quite ripe yet, though the bee's were fond of the nectar, we would sneak a quick bite

Time ran short, as we couldn't soil our newly dressed attire, our shoes were polished just right, spit shined

Now, I look back as a grown woman, the willows sway, they make music to my heart, I can feel the tender bellows

I fell in love at twenty-five, a childhood sweetheart, I was his southern bell, he was in the army

When he left for war, all I had left was a locket, I wore around my neck, with his photo print inside

Time passed, and I stopped receiving his letters, then one day, I received a special delivery, it took me down

I fell to the bed, and wept for days, months, years, as I buried my love of my life, willows weep, they cry

The south was never the same, thousands of women lost their men, but the mansion still stands alone

Whispering the names of the fallen, as the cotton balls blow across the countryside, the southern heat of memories swept

My newborn baby arrived just two days after the crisis, and all I say, to my little girl, now twelve, hush little darling, don't say a word, papa's in heaven

Where willows from the south follow, in his honor, in the honor of sacrifice, the pride of life, where angels fly in their line up

A southern comfort, made of strength, and good will, into the valleys, where the wind sings to the leaves of the willows

I will drink to the taste of your kiss, as I toast to you on this fourth of July, the sweet, sweet taste, touches my mouth

Apple wine, so divine, where I fell in love, in the willows from the south
