This Winter Dream
The night draws close, this winter dream.
The darkest visions that I ever have seen.
The shapes of the past that fill my sight.
They are close with me, this winter night.
Their face is blurred, their voices lost.
The air is cold, my breath like frost.
Beneath the cloth, my face concealed
A barrier between, my midnight shield
The wind outside, the trees brush past
Across my window, tap upon the glass
Like reapers scythe, this witching hour
Laid deathly still, I freeze and cower
Till silence is heard, No wind nor tapping
But now father time denies my napping
The clock it ticks, as minutes pass
On this winters night, like they were my last
The haunting sound, like footsteps not mine
Stopped in their tracks by one o’clock chime
Silence lay still, the tic-tocking no more
Now is the sound of my own bedroom door
Unmistakable creak like a sorrowful groan
But on this winters night, like revenant moan
Minds vision surrounds me of that of the dead
Gathering around me, at the sides of my bed
Motionless shadows and silent of speech
Helpless, the light is far from my reach
The morn it eludes me, it’s ever so late
To give me its warmth, than deliver this fate
These visions they haunt, like that of the dead
There, waiting so still at the side of my bed
Fear now within me, my restless old heart
The darkest of images, all playing their part
Creating this scene in the depths of my mind
Reality and horror now viciously entwined
Paralised by these demons, I try to ascend
From within this satin coffin, the bittering end
Summon the strength to lower these sheets
End this nightmare, a dream of such bittersweet
The courage has found me, to focus my gaze
Reciting the words from a biblical phrase
The demons have vanished, the torment no more
They’ve vacated my bedroom, left by the door
The sun has now set, the bluest of skies
No longer the fear, the panic or cries
Darkness forgotten, the images they fade
No longer a memory or heavily weighed
Sounds were just floorboards or innocent creak
Minds own perception turned my madness to bleak
The daylight reveals the truth after all
Until tonight when darkness does fall
