Winter Pond

The face of Winter
polished by the wind,
where the fox encounters itself
as it peers in,
through a looking glass
to another world,
where silver fish lay in state
with eyes of pearl.
The spectral mist
haunts bracken bones,
where the dark fish stir
amongst black, cold stones,
the Heron stands grey
and dares to breathe,
motionless, shocked eye
upon the parting, ragged reeds.
The red sky dawn
heralds the great thaw,
and the sun rolls the pool
of cold iron and tin,
the snowdrops cease
and the snow feathered
Swan staggers in.
