Words meant to hinder

All we are, are pots of gold;
Dirty, impure and old.
Our hidden affluence sealed within
Our young, broken souls

To expose what once was hidden,
Be prepared to wear thick mittens,
Because only by fire
Is your gold refined.

As daggers from the mouths
Of our oppressors fly,
We must hold the pain
And never show we cry.
Because only by fire
Is our gold refined.

As other's envy turn to hate,
They turn to others to tell our fate.
Lies and slander will look like dirt,
But it's only coal for a stronger fire.
Because only by flame
Will our gold be finer.

Because we are different
To what society expects,
We are treated apart
And told we are human wrecks.

But I won't give in.
Words meant to hinder will never dwindle.
Yet a positive mind will rekindle
The weakening glow of a starving flicker.
Because only by flame
Was my gold refined.
