You need to change

You told me to change
Said I needed to improve
All I could do was arrange
Some sort of reprove
I did as you saidÂ
Making the corrections
Still trying to keep your attentionÂ
To hold all your affection
Apprehensive of rejection
Seeing it in her eyes
Reflecting that you wish to mask
That fake broken smile
All I could do was ask
Am I good enough for you
Falling down that abyss
A lump in my throatÂ
Sick to my stomach
Awaiting the expected retort
You need to change
You are not acceptable for me
So I stand at the mirror
Staring at my echo
Saying I’m the one that needs to adjust
She doesn’t like my hair, style or looks
So I got new clothes
Shaved my hair
Got tattoos and pierced my ears
I did as you saidÂ
Making the corrections
Still trying to keep your attentionÂ
To hold all your affection
Apprehensive of rejection
Seeing it in her eyes
Reflecting that you wish to mask
That fake broken smile
All I could do was ask
Am I good enough for you
I got checked out
Looked up and down
She took a breath
And so did my world
Those dread words fell out of her mouth
I’m leaving youÂ
You’ve changedÂ
All I want is the old you backÂ

Wow, wonderful ending! Gave me goosebumps.Â
I really like how you repeated the lines:Â
You penned a 5 star poem here poet!Â
What is most enduring about the poem is the sound and the subject. It fits well with many relationships; one person wants another person to "change" who they are to fit into their "ideal" mate. Then, after you try your hardest to make these changes, they leave anyway. I really like how you have the poem set up also. Well done.Â
