Poem -

Your forest // without you

Your forest // without you

The woods that I stand before are deep and dark and lovely,

And the trees all around stretch for miles and miles above me,

They groan in the wind that whispers that you love me.

-

My eyes watch the treeline and my form does twist and shake,

My hands hook and claw as I feel my own back break,

I’m beginning to see through the trees that were once opaque.

-

The woods that I stand within are deep and dark and silent,

My once peaceful heart has turned a shade of violent,

It beats faster every second like an ever-present tyrant.

-

I think I was crying, but if so, the tears have dried,

Like I’m missing a limb, your empty space is by my side,

I try to run from your absence but my shoes are untied.

-

The woods that surround me are deep and dark and daunting,

They call to me, the voices rise whispering and taunting,

They sing your song that has shifted from gentle to haunting.

-

You once said that I was as sweet as a dove is white,

So surely if I deserved the world, I deserve to set it alight,

But the trees will tear me into pieces to reward my spite.

-

The woods that surround me are deep and dark and grim,

I tell them a false name, so my grave is a pseudonym,

My legs ache to run as I’m tore limb from limb.

-

Somewhere in my head I watch the sunset of our love,

My unstained soul flutters like a mourning dove,

As it disappears and the moon veers in from above.

-

The woods that I die in are deep and dark and sad,

They watch as I lose my battle and fall, still ironclad,

A weakened sufferer; an anti-matter Galahad.

-

So now my skeleton rots, as I am overthrown,

my eternal monument is forever debased to bone,

and your face flickers behind my eyes as I die on my own.

Hope, this is superb, I'm a HUGE Robert Frost fan so I was instantly drawn to this one, there is something about poems referencing dark woods, they capture me....you beautifully framed each stanza love the imagery you evoked, if ever there was a poem that 'transported' a reader, this one does 'transported' my senses into it, excellent poem,  pulled quoted this line

'The woods that I stand within are deep and dark and silent,
My once peaceful heart has turned a shade of violent,
It beats faster every second like an ever-present tyrant.'
