From Clara' grocery to Seth's candlelight braised spicy chicken.

From Clara' grocery to Seth's candlelight braised spicy chicken.

And there he was again, passing by the farm. There are so many paths that lead where he headed but he always chooses this path. So many times he was rewarded. A smile naturally formed on his face as he viewed her walk out of pen, baskets as usual in her hand, she was wiping sweat from her fore hand and shielding her eyes from the sun as she spoke to one of the workers. She was with each passing day amazing.

He had watched her for months, and all he had gotten were friendly greetings that were less awkward thanks to the spirit of the holidays. He knew he wanted more and hoped she would come to see it too. After enjoying and saving most of the moment he could, he started the bike and headed for his usually grocery store.

Good morning pretty face! You came right on time, fresh spice just came in, and my uncle brought some of your favorites….

Clara, you never run out of offers.

Now tell me they don’t please you? Come have a look you know you will like it.

Seth Smiled following Clara. She was good at what she does. She had helped him select a number of choice spices and ingredient that has made his restaurant popular and she has been marvelous on the prizes and the offers she had.

Wow! This looks good. He sniffed. And also smells good.

Told you so. So this are samples you try it out and if they turn out okay, we talk business, and you know it’s always good.

Has always been.

I have another deal I will be giving you soon; actually I was hoping you could patronize, the offer.

As regards?

Chicken. Meat, eggs….

Okay….

I will have more details soon, just giving you heads up.

Then I can’t wait to hear it.

Okay then, enjoy the rest of your day.

They walked out her out of her office, he heading for the shelves, he always like to take note of the changes and the latest product available for him to experiment on. Today was going good, until he heard sound of terror in the voices of some of the customers. He turned to see what was going on.

*********

Alright every one, we can see all of you in the cameras, so don’t try any thing stupid, just come over and lay down on the floor with your phone and wallet where I can see them, and this will end fast for both of us. One of the masked men said.

Hey ladies at the corner! We don’t have all day, come join the others. On the floor, now! The other masked person said. He headed for the counter pointing the gun to the cashier’s head. Hand it over!

****

In that moment Lucas saw his business meeting blowing up big time. He was already running late and now this? Why Today? All he wanted was a pack of cigarette, one he would have gotten close to where he was heading but he just had to be an impatience cow! He was ought to meet a client. Classy model like goddess Helen, at Briggs for the best pasta and lamb steak with delicious wine, take her back to the apartment to finalize the price and signal the papers of her newly acquired property and hope the mood will be right for other avenues. She had been flirty through out the transaction. Showing off her hot body. She got him thinking of the dresses her wore, the perfume that lingered in the air, those wavy glittering hair that teased him, toyed with his emotions and fueled his passions during their meetings. He believed its part of sealing the deal, and definitely didn’t have a problem with that part. The sealing, he had played, perfected and rehearsed making a fool of his thoughts but damn was he going to so make the most a reality. Now he wondered if he would ever have a deal to seal in his life.  He felt more sorry for the little girl trebling beside him.

*****

And all Kimberly, the little girl wanted was ice cream, one she would have gotten for free and unlimited at her supposed friends birthday, the same one her mum called off after making her fantasize, rehearse and plot the perfect story for the rest of her friends who weren’t invited, one she also planned to have the birthday girl introduce her to her hot friends and her hot cousin (then she could finally know his name and flaunt it all she wants). She couldn’t believe what they just walked themselves into. She begged, cried, starved, even threaten her mum that she would die if she didn’t make it for the party, until her mum told her she would get her the forbidding dress code, “the too expense wrist watch” and of course the new blended favor of ice cream. All she felt like doing now was cry and pee her pants.

******

That witch! Not only did she succeed in breaking her heart and that of her daughter’s, she had also succeeded in making them walk into a robbery. She held her Kimberly’ hand tight. The poor sweet heart is so young to understand why she can’t go for the party, what true betrayal meant. Diane took a deep breath; it was amazing to find out dying wasn’t scary any longer. She had a naughty break up with Kim’s dad, loss jobs, survived two accidents. She was till alive, but this was different. That her so called friend went behind her back to their boss to ruin her reputation for the promotion, played the seductive card. What she didn’t know was that the boss already had Diane on the list for promotion and that they had dated and till see each other. in fact he was taking the relationship to the next level, he was in love with her. He knew her kind of person. He had to tell her what went on. She trusted the witch; she can’t believe she volunteered to make brownies and muffins for the party.  Ridiculous! She hoped they all starved and choke on the ice cream for all she cared. She smiled.

*******

Lying on the floor reminded her how much she missed her childhood. They used to play in the fields her siblings, her parents chasing and tossing them in the air. During the summer after every chore, mummy’s cool lemonade was always daring their thirst, which it always quenched. Her brothers had all gone to the city, her only sister married, and the farm was all hers. As she always said it was her dream to farm. And she has been doing well at it. She wanted to try out the birds, see the profit and try something new. And her new buddy Clara, who she met at one trading fare, encouraged her from the moment she mentioned it all the way to this moment.

This is so, so awkward. She thought. This wasn’t how she planned for them to meet again, especially now that she found out that he was the owner of the restaurant that will be patronizing her poultry. She now lying across him could see his pretty face. He looked provoked, interrupted, and somewhat attractive. They had met on few occasions, valentine’s day when she was hopelessly lonely they sat awhile together at a park hardly saying any thing, like that’s what they both wanted.  Then during Easter, they met at some gathering; he got her a bonny rabbit, a cute one at that, nothing more, just friendlier. She had seen him now and then but they hadn’t had the right moment. She tried not to look at him but he was just in her face and damn too pretty, what has been on her mind had pushed a lot of things away.

She hated this very moment but she couldn’t help it, she sneezed. That got everyone’s attention, especially his now. She was scared, now she knew she was all red.

*****

She missed her regular omelets this morning over coffee because of her careless last night. She couldn’t afford to miss out on the sudden reunion with her childhood friends who come briefly for some stuffs and were leaving early this morning. What a night! Louis remembered the light from the disco; the regular beats of the music, the laughter, the dancing, and the screaming to the favorite songs, the chats, the dares and the drinks. She remembered giving Pete: she childhoods sweet heart a deadly dirty kiss, which earned her 200 bucks and a chance for them to make it work.

After partying, Christine begged her to move, come with them; the city was alive, filled with fun and opportunity. She missed hanging out with her. Almost crying now they held hands, which finally made them to lean on other shoulders as they walked their way home.

Why was she remembering all these? Yes she knew the gun pointed at her was far more awakening than the cups of coffee she had this morning. Why the flashes, why the flashes? Her mind was racing. Bingo! The bracelet! That dangled behind the gun. The same type she and Christine won yesterday from a fast food joint around the corner.  She handed the cash to the mask person. She hoped, as a loan.

He had been grumbling and complaining about it to his wife, it had his shoes laces, his shoes even their foodstuff, she paid little attention to it. She said it might die by itself in a couple of days. But he knew this rodent, it was the destructive type, its natural death will be a loss, for the earlier it dies the lesser their cost.

Grace, highly upset, came to agree with Mike when the rat made a mess of her kitchen. She had been hiding things or keep thing out of its reach. But this time it was determined to get the pastries she left on the table, one she had save up to get, preserved the best ingredients, woken up so early to special baked for an occasion. It clawed its way to the top, numbing on anything in sight. She walked in on time to watch the rodent run for safety. She screamed not because of it size but because of the mess he had made.

Mike thought he would have the final laugh after setting up his old trap. It was a killer. It took care of its kind, giving them the death they deserve, depending on how they want it. He laughed as he remembered one incident in which the rodent was trying to be smart. It got its mouth trapped in the name of getting away with the prize; it dragged the trap all night till it gave it up. He wanted worse for this one. He didn’t stop at just the cheese; he greased chicken with cheese as if to give the rat it’s last meal before execution. But that wasn’t his last. The trap snap all right but the cheese and chicken were gone. He left a “thank you, I will be back again “note around the corner, one Grace cleaned in anger.

He woke up this morning with poison on his mind and boy was he going to get the best brand.  Has he lay on he floor, he felt poisoning wasn’t going to be enough. The rodent just got him robbed, again.

******

Puberty! They act as if they even knew what they were talking about.  He wondered what they would say was up with the robbers. Grant actually wished they were here, definitely they would run their mouth and have themselves killed. And that’s what they needed, to be out of his life.

Every single little thing has been wrong, about him not living up to standard. He wondered who set it up in the first place? What’s up with the grades at school anyway, he was passing and going to the next level, most of the time with summer school. What the hell! Most of the hot girls were there too. He was all the attention they needed and he gave it to them, any way they wanted. As for the guys, most routes pass through him, he was well informed and had his influences, which mostly fell into three classes: those that roll with him, those that respect and fear him and lastly those that would needed him.

Things became more complicated when his parent both got promotions and his elder sister just graduated from college. The pressure just started building up. They all started demanding all sort of crap from him. Responsibility! He was happy he took their advice to be responsible; he found a part time job (instead of playing hours of worthless games and causing food fights), which gave the perfect excuse to hang out with the guys or his girl(his drug).

He was here because his parent had him do some fixing and shopping in the house. He was so frustrated; mag and movies couldn’t calm him down.  He needed her. He wanted all that could blank him from the rage that was building up inside of him. He got her gifts and protection. As he lay on the floor he considered role-playing. He wondered if she fancied hanging with a rock star.

**********

The world has taken and turned into all sort of things, there is no question about that. Now her sweet little grocery had to have its own share. She hoped nobody gets hurt. She had always planned for secured and successful. Security and protection she was no doubt crazy about, crazy enough to have only dated security personnel.  And she was going to make very good use of it the moment she gets off this floor. She had to be patience and wait for a clear coast.

As Clara lay beside Tracy, it became clear. Is this the bonny guy? She believed Tracy had serious trust issues especially when it comes to guys. She knew she had had two relationships in which they both cheated and left for the city, making her feel her dreams were worthless.  She could understand why Tracy stayed back. It’s not that there is no fun here, it just as private as you want it.  The peace is one you can trade.

Tracy’ sneeze confirmed it; this time it was Seth who fixed his eyes on her, revealing his deep concern. She was glad for one thing but first, she just wanted to get off the floor.

******

After collecting the cash, the masked person emptied their wallets, his partner watching for any quick move. The sneeze got his attention too.  He came closer to see.

And as he did, the little girls sobbing became louder.  It’s okay baby. Diane said.

Are you trying to be smart lady? He asked.

No, I sneeze. Tracy replied. Terrified.

We don’t want trouble. Take what you want, don’t hurt anyone. Clara pleaded. He stepped closer.

Wicked! Grant thought to him self that was a cute gun. He wondered what make and the sound it will give out from the pleasure of pulling the trigger.

You heard the ladies; they don’t want trouble, none of us do. Seth added.

Common boy, you got the cash. Mike stated.

We’re done here. The other masked said after empting the last wallet. No time for this. He whispered into his partner’s ear.

Heads to ground now! He commanded. Soon they were out, driving off on their bike.

******

Mum! Kimberly cried hugging Diane so tight.

Its okay love, it’s all over. Diane said kissing her daughter on the fore head. I’m here.

Clara stood up sprinting into her office. Louis followed her behind.

Craig was sitting in his patrol car enjoying package his sweet heart had handed him this morning. He didn’t have to line for one this time So many times she had made him wish he never had a job to go to or anywhere else to go to than her presence. He enjoyed staying a night at her place, it was ever comfortable and consoling plus he gets to taste her classic cooking. He loved it the most because it helps him think of better things. She was his therapy. His phone rang.

Hello sweetie…

Craig honey I need you to listen, we just got robbed, they just hit the bike and are heading south, there were two of them, both about 6 foot tall, not so built, and Louis said one of them got Ruuny’ fast food bracelet on. Clara reported.

Its any one hurt?

No. She answered trying not to smile because she knew whom he was really concerned for. She could hear him calling other unit, started the car engines.

Good, stay that way.  He said cutting the call and driving off towards one way he was sure they were heading for, After all the south was his specialty. This was just what he needed; this was the sign he was waiting for. She needs a tough man to protect her; he was done being a candidate. It was time he made it official.

******

Clara and Louis came out of the office. Louis went back to her post while Clara informed the other on the police report and reassured them of their safety and quality services provided by the grocery. She went ahead to give them a bonus to help them at least get what they came to shop for. She later walked grandpa Mike to show him her best option for the rodents, handed Kim and Diane ice cream.  Finally she joined Tracy and Seth.

I don’t know how to apologize for the whole incident. Clara said.

It’s not something you plan for. Seth replied.

We’re all safe, that’s what matters most. I’m glad I didn’t make more trouble. Tracy added.

Not your fault Tracy. Oh about this morning’ discussion, Seth meet Tracy, she will be the supplier.

Tracy, its nice to meet you again. So what are you offering?

For now I have broilers and fasting growing supply of eggs. Which will you like to hear of?

Clara’s phone rang and she signaled excusing herself.

Hmmm, okay I have an idea, you give me your choice chicken and I will make my favorite chicken recipe, if both turns out right, we have a deal. How ‘s that? He secretly crossed his fingers, it was twisted but he had to try.

Its not like he was a total stranger and so far he checks out to be okay. She was attracted to him, like children to candies, enchanted as mouse to cheese. She smiled. Its sounds ok. I have some right here, first time on shelf.

Clara, she’s always ahead of the game. They both laughed. It’s till your choice to make Tracy….

Okay, I will do the picking for me. There. Because you will get nothing but the best when it comes from my stock.

Then I will be glad to pay the bill…. They both walked back to the counter. Hope 7o’clock is good.

It’s on time.

Clara heading towards all of them as an officer walked in as well.

Miss Clara. I’m glad to inform you your rightful belonging and that of your customs are safe at the station, it was a good thing you called immediately, it made it easier to predict their calls. Their identities were further confirmed from the fast food joint security camera. So if you don’t mind we will like you and your customers to come do some signing.

That’s great news.

I will like a moment with you. They walked to her office where he proposed to her out front, as the man she always wanted, not just words but pure proof.

We hope to see you. Enjoy the rest of the day. Craig said leaving her breathless.

*******

It was one hell of a day but not an excuse for him to ruin the opportunity he had longed for. He made his personal assistant in charge today although he ensured everything was in order.

The cab stopped in front of the Seth’s Wright restaurant .She walked in gracefully and on time. She smelt of rose and fruits. He kissed her hands as he welcomed and walked her to the table he made especially for both of them. She smiled as she approached the candle light setting. The cutleries were glistering at her, calling for her to feast. He offered her a seat.

For appetizer they had deviled eggs and meat pie. He then announced the main course. Braised chicken madam, with exotic spices and noodles with specially made red wine. Bon appetite.

Tracy waited for him so they could taste the meal at the same time. Oh my, this is…. awesome! You will give me some hints, wouldn’t you?

His heart settled back in its rightful position. But he said confidently. I believe you know the hints. From Clara’s grocery to Seth ‘s candlelight braised spicy chicken. Right ingredients, right timing, right taste.  He stood to pour the Wine, letting her sip its goodness. You are the secret, Tracy.

And it happened again. She blushed helplessly.

Yes I tried this out for you and I have never known chicken could taste any better, your handy work. Tracy, I don’t know how to say it, you have been a special person the more I see you, the more I want to be, be everything that I can possibly be for you, that will you happy. I don’t want to be that guy that gets to see you on occasions, festivals and now even business. I want you, Tracy all the time, whatever time. Tracy I love you. And it has been on from the first day we met.

She smiled. So it took Seth’s braised spicy chicken to get us to this point?

And it will take yes from your pretty lips to take it all the way. He squatted beside her, taking her hands. Tracy will your be my girl?

She shivered with excitement.  Then it looks like we will be having both business and pleasure. She looked him in the eyes. Yes.

He kissed her hands. So we have a deal then?

Starting whenever you please.

Can I share this dish with the rest of the world to show how much you inspire me? He did it. He made her cry with joy after such a long time. She wiped her tears with the napkin he gave. She laughed. Tracy?

Okay, as long as I get to know the secret recipe.

And the dish has your name? That made her smile.  Spicy Tracy. They laughed. Let’s show the world what chicken’s made for, with your inspiration.

Cheers to that… They sipped as they both slipped into each other’s hand, enjoying the rest of the wonderful evening.
