Mirage

11.PM, the air is cold, and all you can hear is the tiny sounds of insects invading the nighttime.. water flowing gently from the stream, drifting away from the night.. back to where it came from.. to trickle slowly to safety.. Sophie sits on a rock, legs folded, her hands clasped together, as if she was at ease with herself, watching the stream drift by, she flicks her hair back from her eyes, her light blue eyes could attract a man's attention from miles back, her smile could make them weak at the knees.. but she was never really interested, nor content with spending her days with a man, she didn't need a man for company.. she had her books, her own imagination..

She also had the memories of her sister with her, beside her, behind her, they were everywhere.. and as she started to jot down words in her pad.. she felt slightly colder than usual, felt as if she wasn't really alone, but deep down she knew that she was, and as she skimmed a rock gently down the stream, she took one look and then looked again.. in an aura of confusion, she thought she could see the reflection of her sister, as if she was just standing right behind her.. but she was certain that it couldn't be right.. her sister died over five years ago now, due to a tragedy so heart wrenching.. she wasn't behind her, Sophie told herself.. over and over again..

Sophie began to think.. was her mind going? Was this real? Sophie still felt more colder than usual, she felt scared.. but also felt safe.. safer knowing that if someone was with her.. that it was only her sister.. but why here? Why at this very place.. but she then remembered, the funeral.. it was.. odd.. as if somewhat staged... as if no one really knew.. what happened..

And as Sophie took a further step back.. she felt something with her foot.. as if she trod on something.. that wasn't hard enough to be a rock.. yet soft enough to just be mud.. or a puddle.. sophie.. looked down.. noticed a hand, covered slightly in mud, and as she turned she was shocked..

There were two bodies.. two bodies lying face down.. in mud, just inches from the stream, their dresses that were creamy white.. now covered in mud.. and completely wet.. Sophie took a hard look at the bodies.. then noticed something weird.. like she was confused, as if it was a mirage..

The bodies were of Sophie.. and her sister.. lying there, defenceless, alone out here in the dark, in the mud.. beside the stream which was just flowing by quietly now.. bodies so cold.. they could grasp your hand tightly and never let go for eternity.. half of the bodies had flesh rotting away, the wretched smell polluting the air, five years now, and.. they've never been found.. never been recovered.. they were missing.. and missing.. they will always be..
