Rapunzel - RETOLD BY SARAH BECKETT GILES

~~Rapunzel- A poem

Sitting alone in her room
Filled with a constant sense of gloom
Trapped inside a tower tall
Hemmed in by a cold stone wall
Kept here by a heartless crone
In this place she had grown
Now a woman childhood gone
Questioning what she’d done
Food was served without a word
Anguished cries went unheard
No way out she could foresee
Her only hope to be free
At the window she had cried
For the life she’d left behind
Praying one day help would come
That this nightmare would be undone
At the sill she combed her hair
Of freedom she dreamed to dare
The door was locked solid and she had no key
But a way out there had to be
Night after night she pondered ways
As out the window she would gaze
Much too high to risk a jump
How could she escape this dump?
Then a crazy idea gave her hope
With her hair she’d fashion a rope
It was longer than she was tall
She would use it to scale the wall
Tie it to the iron bed
Lower herself down instead
It was a risk she had to try
If she didn’t here she’d die
Tonight after the crone was here
She would simply disappear
Humming softly she plaited her mane
Not one more night she would remain
The crone came and went as she usually did
Of this cell she’d soon be rid
Using the knife from her meal
She hacked off her plait now it was real
Secured one end to the hardy frame
Then smashed out the window pane
Threw out the rope into the night
Oh joy of joys the length was right!
Down she clambered filled with glee
She had done it-she was free
Far and fast away she ran
To find her family was the plan
Followed her memory where it lead
To parents who’d believed her dead
Her mother cried and touched her face
Locked her in a tight embrace
It was over she was home
Punishment would fall the crone
From here on in only love and laughter
So happy was her ever after
