The Spiritual Buterfly

My husbands dad died on Easter Sunday 2012. I don't remember which one of my husbands relatives mentioned this to me, but someone made a remark about butterflies as psychopomps and to pay attention to them as the funeral neared.

We returned home from spending time with his mom, and as I was putting my things away, a small yellow butterfly fell out from the right hand pocket of my jacket when I hung it up. I hadn't been outdoors while wearing the jacket, and the pockets had zippers (the pocket the butterfly came out of was partially zipped, so it would have been very difficult for anything to get inside. It was still alive. I carefully picked the butterfly up by the wings and let it sit on my palm and I carried it outside.

I have a strained relationship with my in-laws, so I have no idea why my father-in-law would choose to "visit" me or say "hello" like that. I have no other explanation for what happened.

It is believed that psychopomps can come in many different forms, and help souls travel to the afterlife. I think that if it was in fact her father-in-law, that he probably wanted to let her know that he cared about her too, or something like that. He could have visited her in a nice, non-scary way.
