Why I Hate Saint Bernard Dogs
Four decades ago, a neighbor who lived in my neighborhood owned a Saint Bernard dog. Her dog would roam around the neighborhood and kill people's pets. The dog's name was Buffy.
On May 11, 1982, our Chihuahua accidentally got outside and Buffy killed her. Our Chihuahua's name was Penny. In addition to killing Penny, Buffy also killed my cat. I hated that dog and I didn't think highly of the owner either.
Buffy's owner would allow the dog to roam around the neighborhood and kill people's pets. She didn't even care that her dog did this. She felt no remorse. She wouldn't keep the dog tied or put up a fence to keep her dog in her yard. That dog caused a lot of misery for us and other neighbors as well.
Mom and Dad took Buffy's owner to court but lost. The judge said he couldn't do anything because there was no leash law in Tennessee. But the judge told Mom and Dad that if Buffy came on our property again, we could legally do anything we wanted to the dog to protect our property.
Buffy came on our property. Dad threw my aluminum baseball bat at the dog and knocked her down. Buffy came on our property again. My brother had an air pellet rifle. He pumped that pellet rifle ten times and shot Buffy in the head with a BB. It knocked her over. I'm normally against doing such things to an animal, but because of Buffy's violent nature, my family and I didn't care.
Dad's coworker said that if we paid him $100, he would kill Buffy. Mom and Dad considered it but decided they didn't want to go that far. In 1985, we learned that Buffy had to be put to sleep after becoming ill. We were very happy when that happened. If that makes my family and I look bad, I apologize. But please consider something. That dog caused a lot of misery for us and other neighbors.
I don't like Saint Bernard dogs. I truly hope that other Saint Bernard dogs aren't like Buffy. But I truly do dislike that breed. I love Chihuahuas and Great Danes but I hate Saint Bernards. Nobody else in my neighborhood has ever owned a Saint Bernard and I hope it stays that way.
