Do You Wish?

Do you regret that drunken night?
That cost you,
Me,
The love of your lifeâŚ
When your baby looks at you,
Do you wish his eyes were blue?
And would you have used
Protection
If you'd known there'd be no
Resurrection?
Do you hate yourself the way I do?
Do you wish his eyes were blue?
A silly mistake,
AÂ one-time first,
A split-decision you made
That left you cursedâŚ
When your baby looks at you,
Do you wish his eyes were blue?
When you lie awake at night,
Lost without me in your sight,
When you toss and turn alone
Because I won't pick up the phone,
Do you hate yourself the way I do?
Do you wish his eyes were blue?
As the years come and go
With you rotting in the home you broke,
Haunted by my living ghost,
The price of being unequally-yoked,
When your baby looks at you,
Do you wish his eyes were blue?
When our paths crossed today
For the first time since that night you strayed,
You saw cradled in my arms some joy,
A beautiful bouncing baby boy...
How did it feel when staring back at you,
Were eyes like mine big, bright and blue?
Do you hate yourself the way I do?
Do you wish his eyes weren't blue?
Tell me how it made you feel
To see your worst nightmare made real,
You broke your own heart more so than mine,
And another man gave me love in 9
Months it took to make me whole once more,
Whilst you're left with a baby to a whore...
When your baby looks at you,
Do you wish his eyes were blue?
And now you see this child of mine
Does it send you back in time?
How badly do you wish you could undo
The mess you made the chance you blew?
Now as my baby looks at you,
Do you wish his eyes werenât blue?
I used to wish he'd have brown eyes too,
Resembling the ones I fell in love with on you,
But I don't love you here and now
And my favourite colour's no longer brown...
When my baby looks at me
With eyes resembling sapphire and sea,
I no longer hate you the way you still do,
But God I'm glad his eyes are blue.

I have several thoughts having read this poem a number of times. I think you knew before you started or at least part way through that you wanted to work towards that last line. I also think this came out as almost like a stream of consciousness, that once you started it there was no stopping it until you reached that last line. I also applaud you for the rhymes all of which flow, none of which are forced. As for the content what can I say other than some get what's coming to them. I think my favourite line is where the tone of the poem suddenly changes - "do you wish his eyes weren't blue?" Great line in the perfect place in what is a brilliantly constructed poem.Â
Thank you Bernie! Your comments are always deeply appreciated. This is the piece you inspired me to try & produce last night. I am very happy with it. So thank you, again, for your encouraging & constructive words! đÂ
