Poem -

Silhouettes of buildings and palm trees

There was never going to be enough time
To tell you everything.
How death lay inside me unspoken but
Perceived all the same.
Now I spy the silhouettes of buildings and
Palm trees from the same window
In the same room I lock myself away in.

The sun would be going down
And I would remember how I worked in this
Or in that building, remembering the map
Of this town.
Remember me now.
I would have you see through my eyes,
To look on the silhouette in the distance

Like I was one of the shadows
Of one of those palm trees,
Eager to please, my breath apart from me
As if I was observing me,
Feeling just enough like a monkey.
I would try to describe the drizzle of rain.
The soft heat against the skin

Was just like a blanket.
There was a glass in my right broken hand
From fighting. The details of this,
The details of that small thing nobody
   notices.
Finding moving forward for those of us
Less obstinate is like the sense one has
Whereby the mood, set on you

By Elvis on repeat, distorts.
The view a marker of a place I find hard to
Say I don't want to move on from.
If you were the palms
I was the shadow.
I will stay put as you go on a path I cannot
Follow.

A great sadness runs through this it seems to me... almost as if the narrator is contemplating suicide... a very poetic suicide, as if making peace with that lost to him/her. x
