2013 Relay for Life

Each year the women
In my family walk
The relay for life
To help cancer stop
*
This year was no different
We hit the track hard
Went mile after mile
Past the sun’s final shard
*
Tired and weary
But not wanting to quit
I looked up ahead
My heart took a skip
*
All dressed in white
Blonde hair and ball cap
My stocky son Josh,
Was taking a lap.
*
No other could walk
With his same duck like gait
Nor could they have
The same distribution of weight
*
I could see his half grin
On the side of his face
Focused on walking
For this noble caused race
*
I wanted to run
To catch up to him
But all I could do
Was stand still and grin
*
As he passed the tracks light
His hair turned to brown
The boy became thin
Nothing at all like my son.
*
The boy I had seen
Was gone in a flash
A treasured memory
To add to my stash
*
I count my blessings
When my son visits me
Tears of joy and sorrow
Shed effortlessly.
*
I don’t mean to sound
Ungrateful so to speak
I just miss my son
In times when I’m weak.
*
Dear God, please tell Josh
Thank you from Mom
We’ll see you next year?
Cancer walk strong!
