A Maiden’s Song

I stepped into his forest,
A maiden in search of being loved
I called in song, I danced in sunsets
As the trees swayed in rhythm above
A lonely hunter walked towards me, looking for a woman to claim
He knew exactly what words to use and how to whisper my name
He touched my hands so gently and caressed me with his sweet kiss
He undressed me with his lies
As I licked the poison on his lips
Such bliss and toxicity rose beneath us like a mist
It solidified around us and caged me in with a hiss
I ignored the darkness that grew,
I welcomed it and called it home
Time went by and the hunter came and went,
leaving me in the cage alone
I grew hungry, thirsty and weary
As rivers ran freely in my sleep
I denied I was in pain
Letting my silence keep the peace
The hunter would return and beat me down so I couldn’t breathe
chain me up by the neck, metal dangling at my feet
I was frozen in my predicament, I made a choice and I chose him
“What a silly maiden I thought to fall for someone on a whim”
I grew stronger in my chains,
I felt fire in my veins,
I blew through the cage of shame as my spirit burst into flames
I no longer needed the hunter to give me everything I need
Whatever resources I was searching for, I had found them all in me
He was a trickster in disguise, the deception made me mad
In my rage I unleashed a power that I never knew I had
My back ached as I rose to step out of the darkness alone
I ran as fast as I could
To the only safety that I know
There she stood at the edge, holding a lantern aloft
I ran into her arms, my body broken as a cost
She held me so tight as her arms wrapped around me
I cried into her bosom “ I can’t believe you found me”
I was always searching for you, you could feel me deep inside
She lifted my head, looked into my eyes and I felt her energy in me rise
I could hear the hunter calling for me, but I was done with him this time
I limped away from his forest to embrace a future that was mine

A tale of female empowerment ...well written as a kind of black fairytale though I think the princess here sealed her own fate by the age old idea that
'a woman needs claiming'
I'm glad she found herself in the end
Enjoyed the read x
I am so glad that the message I was trying to relay in this poem has shone through. You are right the maiden did seal her fate, she acknowledges that it is what she chose, because she thought that’s what every woman is supposed to have, want and need. As you already figured out the woman at the edge is herself and that is all the maiden truely needed all along. ♥️😭😊
