A Piece Of Cake
Someone said it's a 'cinch,' so easy to manage,
all the perks, guaranteed, all part of the package;
it came in layers, strata, geography teacher said,
multi-coloured, brown, pink, orange and deep red.
Life flew by, I seemed to be a winner, thirty years ago,
success came and went, up suddenly, downhill slow;
I didn't mind, I'm still here and many others long gone,
strange to meet them again - my dad: 'How are you son?'
I'm fine, cuold have been better, take care of health,
everything pales into insignificance with all that wealth;
I still have my cake and eat it, a lovely sweet gateau,
slowly, savour, grin at you when I'm eating so slow.
Mother gazed heavenwards, swallowed, licked her lips,
she said: 'Cherish the moments my boy, bits by bits.'
