Anyone Who Had A Heart

Anyone Who Had A Heart

They've just found a heart inside an ancient fish,
with stomach, intestines, liver, as old as you could wish,
three hundred and eighty million years old, so we're told,
buried in rock and pumping no more but ice cold.

That fish swam past The Garden of Eden with knowledge,
to have known Adam and Eve had been a privilege,
it luckily declined a bite from a golden apple mystery,
preferred dust from the sea bed and a dollop of algae.

It's refusalĀ  turned out to be fortuitous, still perfect,
untouched or tainted, innocence had gained respect;
it looked at humans with their lies and indiscretions,
crimes, thieving, murder, rape and bad sexuall relations.

The water was warm as it eased itself through currents,
one day they would find me and admire from a distance.
