Autumns Reign

Sometimes Summer slinks
away
this year it seemed to
disappear.
Before I even noticed,
summer handed its late rains
to Autumns reign,
leaves turning too quick
for my
surprised distracted eye.

Longer and longing,
the Summer sun relents.
The moon more confident.
Still.

Bare whip lash trees
shed vivid colour
and the giggling wind
comes out to play.
Rearranging,
knocking hats off heads,
messing with your brolly,
pushing the odd, stray
shopping trolly
across burnt orange car parks,
half empty
half lit
with strange golden light.

Gardens, berry-freckled
damp and contented.
Rested.
Gearing up
to tough the
freeze.
Watching summer disappear,
welcoming the red
breasted.
Farewell to
ardent gardeners
Knees
till next year
when I plan to be
surprised again.
As Summer slips
to Autumns reign.
