There is something deeply primeval in the contemplation of the flames, is there not?!
Some neurologists and philosophers believe that it was the discovery and harnessing of fire which facilitated the growth and development of the human brain into the remarkable organ it is today; that early man, and woman, sat by the tribal fire at night, staring into the flames, dreaming our first dreams and aspirations for a better world.
A world of OUR making.
It was the fires which ensured our own survival.
And your poem? It's beauty is in its simplicity.

Personally, I think you're more than capable of tackling more complex forms. Have you read Stephen Fry's book, The OdeΒ Less Travelled? It's a great crash course in writing all kinds of poetic forms (the tanka's in there too...if memory serves??).
