BORN TO BE

BORN TO BE

Beneath a fallen, moss ridden, old oak treeΒ
Is where, we as caterpillars, grew to be
Two furry, brown bodies, curled around one another
Always safe and secure, I felt with my mother.

I remember the days of her being with me
Grazing on Autumns' crisp, crunchy, red leaves
This used to be our daily routine
But now my mothers' no where to be seen.

I've peered over petals of rotting red roses
Scrambled between entwined, spiny brambles
That was four moons ago, with sleepless nights
When my mum disappeared from my life, out of sight.

The daylight brought me new found fears
And my coat was soaked from constant tears
Two moons later, I gave up hope
Deciding to hide inside our old hollowed oak.

Never before had I ventured alone
But somehow I felt this would be my new home
In the darkness my squinted eyes fought to see
A place I could rest caterpillars' body.

I looked up and down, tried to hear any sound
And that's when I found a familiar ground
Her distinct scent, I could finally smell
Overwhelmed I shouted out "MUM"!! with a yell.

"Hello, mummy?Β
Please tell me it's you
"It's true my dear, I'm inside this cocoon"
"And someday soon, you will be too".

"I'm sure you have so many questions for me"
"My disappearance wasn't that simple, you'll see"
"I had to leave"
"And I'm so sorry".

"As an adult insect we manifest"
"Metamorphosis instincts guided me to this nest"
"Within these woven walls I must rest"
"Until I have passed the caterpillars' test".

"Not much longer to wait for your mum"
"To become one with wings, sing the butterflies hum"
"And by the time I fly from this tomb"
"You'll be ready to dive back inside my same womb".
"This is what we were born to do"

Within an hour or two, out my mum flew
A magnificent creature adorning features brand new.
A few days passed, baby watched over mum
Flying high, close by, as the moon turned to sun.

Patiently waiting to be with his mum
Laying within oak logs inner sanctum
Until finally caterpillars' time had come!

A little later on, her baby was then reborn
"Do you see now my precious?"
"We are free and airborne"
The baby then replied
"Yes mum I see!"
"This is where we as butterflies grow to be!
