Coffee Cups and Doughnuts

Coffee Cups and Doughnuts

'We don't have this on Avelar,' the alien told me,
as I crunched a sweet sugary ring of mystery,
'Try some coffee,' I told him but there was no mouth,
only the usual funny slant eyes travelling south.

'You must eat and drink surely, I said amazed,
'No, we do things differently, 'He replied unfazed,
'We can not die, we have deserts, have to survive,'
'In fact, it's better without any nutrients - we thrive.

'Do you have wars, arguments, rape and climate change,
naughty children, library books, schools, the whole range,
do you have an Avelar song contest, come last every year,
play football, miss penalties, pretend that you enjoy beer?'

'No, none of that, look at me - we all look just the same,
which is good, sounds boring but then there's no one to blame.'
