Crusade

Crusade

This is no holy war nor jihad,
No fight for what's deemed right.
With bloodied hands on both sides,
In a war with no end in sight.

Of innocents slaughtered like cattle,
In each Supreme Being's name.
A war I blindly participated in,
To my undying guilt and shame.

No kingdom of Heaven found here,
Nor tranquil garden of Paradise.
Just simple ghastly mathematics,
Human attrition paying the price.

You're all doing the Lord's work,
Our priest's preach until hoarse.
Work of rape murder and torture,
Bane suffering without remorse.

The debased elements of mankind,
Displayed on an honourless field.
By Knights and by Saracens,
Sharing hatred's never healed.

Long swords duel crescent scimitars
Cutting enemies down like wheat.
In enduring battles lasting days,
With neither side conceding defeat.

Back home scribes write poems,
Songs are sung of heroic deeds.
While here the dead are looted,
Purses bloated with vile proceeds.

I fell after Constantinople was sacked,
The culmination of our Fourth Crusade.
Shielding a woman scared to death,
Backstabbed by drunks out to degrade.

There is only one realistic outcome,
Not by higher powers but by fate.
A cruel fate in this war of hell,
A war not of victory but stalemate.

Alas until wiser heads do prevail,
This forever war will never cease.
Hope embodies trust and compassion,
For all religions to live in peace.

Hope delivers trust and understanding,
For all religions to live in peace."

A prayer and hope of all peacemakers
Hopefully sooner than later my friend.

You know Shaun, it is so refreshing to read a work that does not glorify war and killing...and wars over religion are an abomination and a true hypocrisy.
And really...what is the fight over? It can only ever be over the personal thoughts of the man with the gun because religion is only ever an idea...there is no concentrate proof and never will be that any else exists except us....so maybe it's not such a good idea to kill each other off after all ...great write 💞

Marion I hear you loud and clear my friend and thank you.
For what does any war achieve apart from bloodshed and never ending hate.
WW1 was a meat mincer for all involved and bullshit war started because a grand duke was assassinated at the cost of millions of lives for one man!.
But with regard to WW2,  where good people had to fight and toil to end tyranny's odious, murderous dark cloud from spreading.
A worthy war, if one can call killing and destroying one another worthy.
In the end the Nazi's were defeated,  the Japanese militarists were crushed,
the Italian fascists routed and surely justice has never been better served.
But the cost involved, the never ending tragic human cost of lives that could have been.
Thanks again Marion and just for the record I'll put a poem of light tomorrow.
Nos da my friend and hugs to you.

A powerful write Shaun. I think Marion nailed it with her comment. It is so sad that religion, which is meant to teach us to do good, can give birth to such minds that manipulate it to do the worst things. War is never the answer. Lives should never be expendable, because every single soul matters
A brilliant write my friend x
