Dark Eros

Dark Eros

The voice comes from the shadows in the night
I’d longed to hear it threaten and enthral
In darkling tones it sings of strange delight

I’d waited in the failing of the light
How long that waiting seemed I can’t recall
The voice came from the shadows in the night

At first unuttered word it gave me fright
That stark unflinching needfulness appalled
In darkling tones it sang of strange delight

In straining for its kiss; I feel its bite
In aching to be raised; I fear a fall
The voice comes from the shadows in the night

Why must I seek for king or knave or knight?
Why must I tremble, helpless, at its call?
In darkling tones it sings of strange delight

It calls me still. And yet I know not quite
From whence it calls: within, without, withal?
The voice comes from the shadows in the night
In darkling tones it sings of strange delight.

Excellent! Hope you did something silly...or fun...or both. Tell me all about it.

Ah! Christmas shopping!! I haven't even STARTED yet. However, it IS one of the things I like about Christmas; buying relatively thoughtful gifts for people you like.

Conversely, Irish winters can be rather miserable: less crisp and cold, more blustery and wet. This one hasn't been so bad, thus far. 'Fierce mild', is the common term I believe. [Yes, I know you're probably going to write a poem called "Fierce Mild" now! Have at it!!]
The main difference is, in Minnesota, you know how to deal with the adverse conditions. Here...a mere two or three inches of snow falls and the whole country grinds to a halt! And no matter how often it happens, we NEVER seem to learn!!!

by the way not all Minnesotans can drive in the winter. take my word for it. It seems all the yahoos come out and drive like rednecks on the first day of snow. slippery and cold they just piss me off lol I went to pick my husband up from work. it is about a twenty minute drive. it started snowing on Monday last week. and it has been snowing off and on all week. I counted 6 cars in the ditch. One car even took out a light pole.

Oh we have yahoos here too! Unfortunately, they don't need snow to end up in ditchesΒ or wrapped around poles. They just need the unthinking arrogance of youth and an unhealthy propensity for utter stupidity. It's a particular problemΒ here in Donegal. But that's all too depressing to discuss here on Cosmo. This is a place for art, literature and the finer things of life, surely?!

It's even more beautiful knowing what inspired you

I also wrote a pantoum for her, '{Echo} Narcissus', soon after which she disappeared from my life. I miss her. I miss her sweetness, her kindness, her deeply cherished friendship and her beautiful words; she was a fine poet. In fact, she was the only person in the world who ever actually wrote a poem for ME.Β

Damn. Life really is rather sad quite a lot of the time, is it not?!

Okay...we have discussed this. I am NOT sweet, remember?! Arrogant, narcissistic, pedantic, intellectual snob with a rep and street cred to protect here!!! Gods damn it!!!!

Oh!...I started my Christmas shopping yesterday. Got the novel Hide by Matthew Griffin for my oldest and most expensive...I mean, dearest friend. Hope he doesn't read this...that would spoil the surprise!

So...how are you, Lisa??

Unless you're really sneaky about it! In which case, it would be genius!! It would be even more delicious if you then came up with a way to get her to carry her own present to the car without suspecting a thing.

The gauntlet has been thrown down, POETESSDARKLY! Do you accept this COMPLETELY ludicrous challenge?!

What?! It took me THREE DAYS to write the last poem I posted here...and two of those was on the third quatrain!!

You decideΒ to write a poem and then write it over the course of an hour?!? Colour me impressed!!!

Thank you.
It's one of my favourites too.

Ted Hughes' version, in his translation of Ovid, is particularly good actually.
