Still Life
a sonnet inspired by the painting of Durham Cathedral by Lorna Caizley
Those silent unseen bells still resonate
Though bells and walls are shrouded--undefined
The shadowed tree-lines rise to contemplate
a darkened demi-world displaced from time.
Autumnal waves of gold and copper crest,
arise and break upon the painted walls.
The bruised and bloodied sky now takes its rest
on captured scene where night can never fall.
But crouched beneath the steeples--still and stained--
a row of simple dwellings (streaked with rust)
complete the balance--sacred and profane--
to dwell and thrive as feeling creatures must.
Occluded now--observing from afar--
They watch you painting in the nightly stars.
Double Haiku Envoi:
the circle closes
as bubbles burst and stars shine
at the beginning
now at the ending
back to where it all began
the circle closes
Lorna,
Thank you for everything...
