Dear God...

Dear God, if You really are up there

Why do You not seem to care

About us, plants, trees and the rest?

Must You really send lightning strikes

Down from the sky?

Destroying forests?- I don’t know why.

And what are we human beings supposed to do;

Fight the forest fires, would this please You?

Or should we “Be still [do nothing] and know that I am God”

And that I have chosen to destroy my own creation

If You really want our undying devotion

Why do You do this?

Why do You subject nature

To freezing cold weather

And boiling hot weather?

And what’s with earthquakes and volcanoes?

Is this just how the Earth progresses and goes?

They destroy all manner of things.  Why?

So Jesus died on the cross to save us

But what about the animals, the plants

and bacteria all around us?

Some say it’s a battle between

You and the Devil

But surely You and He must be level?

If You don’t want there to be a "Rage against God"

(as Peter Hitchens puts it)

Why not end pain.  Surely You could do it?

I hope You read this poem and stop

Destroying various animals and plants

Though in reality I don’t think there’s much chance.

Prove me wrong.
