Despite Our Differences

In the absence of his father
Was ours

In the absence of our mother
Was his

Our parents were not lovers
But we we're their kids

Together they raised us
Though separate lives they lived

Growing up it was like having two homes
To live in

It didn't matter which place
They found their kids in

Either way they were safe
At home.

Our differences
Did not bring racism

Our differences
Did not bring prejudice

Our differences, however
Did bring about jokes

But only
If the love
And respect
Was still felt

Or else,
Out of love
And respect
We left it alone

Rather,
We built

We built ourselves
We built each other
We built together

Our differences
Made things interesting
And our bonds unique

And it's  a blessing

We can share different stories,
Enjoy one another's company,
And reminisce the experiences
We share
