Disability Love

I worked with disabled people for many years, here's a view:
it's like an earthquake - not much sympathy until it happens to you;
then realisation kicks in - nothing's quite the same anymore,
they showed me through corridors and doors, gave the guided tour.
One day I had work to do - walked slowly down a corridor,
I passed an open door, there was a body on a table looking sore,
she had no arms or legs, quadraplegic but happy as could be,
I said: 'How are you?' She smiled and said I'm waiting for my legs.
A friend said that if he was disabled then he would 'top' himself,
an uncaring and inappropriate comment, only thinking of his own health;
I was always surprised how strong willed they could be, irrespective,
because they are important human beings and have so much to give.
We made love, I lifted her on to the bed, she was so very beautiful,
I remembered when she was ambulant, nothing changed, still wonderful.
