Distant Drums

Distant Drums

My uncle used to sing all of the songs,
he crooned, 'Won't you marry me,' where beauty belongs,
asked: 'Why not stay awhile,' what a nice man,
I'm sure that I was his greatest fan.

'I love you because you understand me,' how nice,
wished I could write that level, nice and light,
he 'leaned' into his photograph, with the smile,
had all it takes, nice suit and tie, what style.

I'm an uncle now but could not match his persona,
he loved everyone but I'm more of a loner;
said you can do it too, I said no - it's only you,
only you at that time smiled as you do.

I miss you with that wonderful voice that comes,
when I remember, I still hear the sound of distant drums,
