Drunkenness

After having a stressful day
(Though what do I really know about stress?)
I “find” myself in my local pub again
Answering the call of alcohol.
Â
This has become rather habitual:
Every other night a ritual
Relaxing once more with a pint in hand
Surrounded by friends and familiar faces.
Â
The feelings of pleasure come on pretty quick
I know that my dopamine is flowing
Alcohol seems to take the edge off things
And I find myself wanting more and more…
Â
“Are you having another?” the barman asks
What can I say except “Yes.”?
And my worries start to disappear
Together with my coordination.
Â
As I become less aware of my surroundings
I continue drinking the ale
Tap, tap, tapping on my mobile phone
As the munchies start to kick in.
Â
After the pub it’s a curry with rice
Or sometimes chicken and chips instead
Then I stagger home, half drunkenly,
Worse for wear and I collapse on my bed
A little bit poorer.

This kind of behavior usually begins because of loneliness or an empty, unfulfilling home life; out of a need for camaraderie and friendship.
I mean, c'mon, we're human beings, not mindless robots.
Most of us enjoy the companionship of other human beings.
However, it can quickly lead to problematic behavior such as alcoholism if we're not careful.
Instead of a pint, how about having a cuppa Joe or tea once in awhile.

I can relate to this Michael and also what the wise Dean said about the need for camaraderie and friendship. No-one wants to sit home alone all evening. Great write. Ru :)
