Final Lap

The beach was white, filled with gorgeous warm sand.
I turned from him as I released his hand.
A few steps forward and you were there,
With a delicate smile and beautiful hair.
Your body was elegant though unbearably thin,
But it managed to hide your bruises within.
Together we walked to the edge of the sea,
First we dipped in our toes, then waded up to our knees.
We plunged all the way in and opened our eyes,
It was black and cold, though we were not surprised.
Slowly moving forward into the vast unknown,
You showed me a darkness you always called home.
The farther we swam, the more of you I saw.
Your deep scars and wounds left me silently in awe.
Though you were young, you had lived a long life,
Filled with deep sorrow, pain, and strife.
Your arms had grown tired years ago,
And as your pace faltered it started to show.
All of the others thought you’d be a star,
I guess only I knew you wouldn’t make it that far.
We were travelling alone and holding on tight,
To each other’s comfort, love, and light.
I knew it was time; it had been for a while,
And though I’m not shocked, I’m still in denial.
Now swimming alone in the dark, lonely sea,
My aching lungs burn, though I know you are free.
I’ll try to keep going, but only for you,
Lost and scared, I don’t know what to do.
Come back, come back. I want to help you swim.
I tried for so long, and I’d try till we win.
You said that I helped and though I believe that’s true,
That belief can’t make me okay without you.

Rest in Peace, Rowen.
