Fireflies

She looked at the lights below,
Illuminating the city
Like a thousand fireflies.
She imagined the feeling
Of what it would be like
To fly.
To float on the wind
Light as a feather.
To feel the freedom
That an eagle must feel,
as the breeze carries him
to nowhere.
She imagine the feeling
Of what it would be like
To fall.
The ground rushing up,
No way to stop.
To feel the fear
of a swallow.
Her wing broken in flight,
gravity pulling her down
to her death.
She looks at the city lights,
dancing around her
like fireflies.
Enchanting her.
Daring her to catch them.
And in that moment,
enchanted by beauty
and taunted by death,
she thought she could fly.
