Follow the Beat

Follow the Beat

The drumbeat sounds a muted drone
Monotonous, unceasing.
The camp fires glows with embers
 red all giving heat decreasing.
My love awakes and with a  kiss
 left lightly, walks away.
My  tender love he be  by  night
My soldier boy by day

With feet still ragged from the march
O’er  rough terrain and hills
And shoes of very thinnest gauge,
Unpurposed  ‘gainst the chill
But love will lead, I follow still
So tired but wont succumb.
The pacing timed a heartbeat thud
I’m following the drum

Where’er it leads is where I’ll be
My love walks not alone.
The beating drum will play the tune
that soon will lead him home.
As always I will follow on
My fatigued limbs do smart
My soldier boy will fight his fight,
but I will win his heart!

Always love a good historically themed piece, and this fits the bill very well!  We used to sing a song at school that went  ' Soldier, soldier,  wont you marry me
with your musket, fife and drum?
oh no sweet maid I cannot marry thee
for I have no shoes to put on'

This takes me back to then! Very nice work.

Wonderful piece of work...love it !
By way of a question what era would you travel back in time to? Has to be the 1950s for me.

I love the line always follow the drum . It is very clever.

All good wishes

Thanks  so much for your comments Kieran..I have  some memories of the 50's which was during my childhood and it was certainly a great time..innocent and exciting especially for young people! I guess I would quite like to go back to  The Age of Enlightenment which was spread over a couple of centuries. (late 17th early 18th century).so much new thinking and philosophical changes taking place- then perhaps  pay Jane Austin a visit.... oh so many times to visit!
Have a great day x

Hello John, so nice to  have you read my piece and thank you for your comments, which are  much appreciated. Poetry is, I believe the best form of time travel in that what exists in the poets imagination can be made into a form of reality through his words..it's a wonderful medium!

Hey LO!!...... what a beautifully written escape back into times marching...... to the drumbeat of the anticipation of a soldier boys return to the arms of Love!!..... your use of the dated terminology is subtle and VERY well timed.... adding to the luster of the time period and the flow of the entirety of the piece itself...... you, dear poet sister...... are a true wordsmith.... paying homage to one the most beautiful periods of poetic freedom!!......PINNED for perfection!!....... Love your style girlfriend!!......hugs-n-smiles!!.......T xo ??☀☀♥♥ ? ?
