Poem -

Fool

I left him behind,
either that or he couldn't keep up.
In the playground crying,
threatened by the big 'uns,
giving away his stuff.

The Fool.

So drunk he couldn't stand,
or understand
the harm in it.
Dumped, busted, sacked
yet clamouring, disparate,
desperate for more.

The Fool.

Reacting only
when reaction was needed,
he tightened his time
and backed up
or hid.

The Fool.

Blaming himself always.
Knowing and raw.
Distanced
and wishing for
so much more.

The Fool.

Head bowed hoping.
Relying on the fact
that he was the light they stepped into,
though terrified
he kept it dim.

The Fool.

I thought I'd left him behind.
I thought he couldn't keep up.

Fool.
