When I saw you, standing
Awkwardly pretending to be
Like the others
An image caught in time
Of you
Travelled through my optic nerve like an inverted postcard
Deviant Polaroid
On to the Thalamus
Translated message, subtitled stamp of affection
Messages sent, like digital code
To the neo cortexΒ
Thinking about thinking
Amygdala next
Where fear is stored
And what is love, if not fear
But dressed differently
Fear of loss, fear of loneliness
Fear of incompletion
The hypothalamus passes the message on
Chinese whispers, the nervous system playfully passing it on
To the endocrine system
Directed with a wave of its batonΒ
Release oxytocin
Release vasopressin
Release dopamine
Release the kraken
All to the party place, the limbic system
Emotional centre for emotional care
It all happens in the blink of an eye
An image caught in time, an eternity
And no time at all
Reactant plus reactant equals product
Forever changed chemical state
Forever?Β
What is forever?Β
What is now?Β
We live a thousand times
And die a thousand times over
In that one moment
They call love
