Found in the Dark

I'm trapped inside this room, in this cell, this hole in the dark curled up backwards, crumpled and wadded up like a paper doll. Deep inside myself in the cold dark places were I hide I feel safe, unnoticed by the world that passes by. Outside these walls the halls are bright, colorful and creative. Who would look away from all of that to find a hidden door to a mostly empty room? I lost the key so long ago though I never once tried to leave this gloom. Then you came, bright, colorful and creative storming through these halls right up to the door, key in hand, and walked in to face me. There I was, a tight ball of a gray faded soul down there at your feet, shaking in my hole. I could no longer unfold and rise up to meet you so you came down to me, wrapped around me, so I could see you. I'm trying so hard to trust, I just don't remember how. You are the only light in this room. The only warmth within me. This is the only safe place I have ever known. My fear comes not from a lacking in the love you've shown. It's simply that outside this hidden place, this darkness, pain and betrayal is all I've known.
