Funeral Jim
Jim scanned the page up and down
As he read the obituary column,
He circled the words with a pen
Then changed his look to solemn
ย -
People couldnโt quite place Jim
Another mourner, dressed in black
The ploy would be up if they knew his game
So heโd wait in the church at the back
ย -
Heโd mingle in, and shake hands with the priest
Slowly making his way to the bar,
Though heโd never even met the deceased
The family always bought him a jar
ย -
ย Mourners in the buffet queue
Smiled and were very polite,
As he picked up another Melton Mowbray
And took a hungry bite
ย -
Always a stranger to the departed
They could have been any shape or size,
But he often wished heโd met them
When he heard the family eulogise
ย -
Eventually even his time would come
But he wouldnโt have to pay,
Perhaps they would join him for one last drink
To send him on his way
ย -
He hoped theyโd come in droves
Strangers that never knew him,
And let them all raise a glass
โA toast to old Funeral Jim!โ
ย -
Now weโve all been to many funerals
Thereโs quite a lot to take in,
If you can, spare a glance to the back
Yesโฆ thatโs probably him.

What a touching story. I like the way you narrated the poem, I could seeย
Funeral Jim, helping all the family members who were greiving. Then, at the end he becomes the one who is surrounded by family. Fasinating story. Good job.ย
Thank you Katina

Wow thats very good Well written xxx
Thank you very much Jill x
Love this John...because underneath the flimsy is a tale of lonliness ...sad to think that in order to feel a sense of belonging, occasion and community people do actually do this...especially the older generation ?
Thank you Marion, yes there is a side to it, as I get older I see more "Jims"
John
Woah interesting fantastic story poem , is it true? Better to be a fake mourner for this poor guy than to be a theiving tramp though. I enjoyed the awesome way you rhymed and worded this super poem .kudos!!

Johnย
My take on this is this guy is a tad dark and creepy he must have some hollow need he needs to fill. or maybe it's the free food and drink.... wonderfully written piece John kudos to you
Yes, poetess
he is a real person,ย rather strange and quite sad, it seems to be his way of socializing.ย
