Generation Dream

When we are growing up we are told
you can be whatever you want to be
and do whatever you want to do
As long as you work hard enough
We smile
Because we believe them

As we become children the message changes
Simply the desire to do something is no longer enough
The world begins to teach us stereotypes
While teaching us that everyone is equal
We hear that's for girls
Or that's for boys
We nod
Because we accept what their telling us

Then again as teenagers the story shifts
No longer is desire, passion, and talent enough
Now the grades are the only source of success
Ivy Leauge and Scholarships
Become the only source of the world praise
We work
Because we want to make them proud

Society wonders why as a generation we are confused
It's because as we age and grow
The message changes
The story differs
We are left to find the pieces
Before we can assemble the puzzle
We accept
Because what other choice do we have
