Have we attained Dr.King's dream?

Have we attained Dr.King's dream?

King’s dream ended with the ability to sing from a mountain top,

“Free at last, Free at last, Great God A-mighty, We are free at last.”

Scream loud and proud that change finally caused hate begin to stop,

When finally being a bigot in America was something of the past,

Each year as we mark the passing of Dr. King I can’t help but wonder,

Did his unforgiveable assassination steal social change’s thunder?

I can stand hand in hand with another member of any race,

But that might draw some dirty looks depending where,

If I stand holding a man in my arms and lightly kissing his face,

I would immediately be met with a cold judging stare,

Is a man really free if he can’t be who he is?

Should a woman be judged by who she can kiss?

When socially you find economic groups characterized by race,

When a black man is more likely to be called a criminal than a white man,

Despite the fact that crime actually has the white face,

And someone might get caught in the middle just because their tan,

If we could really say “We’re free at last!”

Everyone would be equal under the eyes of state and god,

New opinions wouldn’t be shunned because of ideals from our past,

And people wouldn’t be hunted down by social kill squads,

Dr.King I can’t say the word free with conviction,

Your dream being attained has become a point of contention.
