He stood atop the barren field

Standing on the barren field
Rifle in his arm
Noises ring out near and far
Sending great alarm
===
āWhere had I been in yesteryear?
Why do I stand here now?
What will I see on other side
If I rise atop the mound?ā
===
The farm, heād heard, was disrepair
His loving maiden fell
Illness grabbed her soul from him
Her letter couldnāt tell
===
Of true delight that was no more
The sudden loss of love
A shading tree, an eagleās squawk
He wished it was a dove
===
His eyes looked left, diverted right
Who were these men he saw?
Was their loving maiden left at home
While they fought a useless war?
===
āCharge,ā he heard the general shout
āAhead,ā the flag, it flew
All he saw was his maidenās soul
The only love he knew.

NB: To all those Civil War enthusiasts, this poem requires poetic license. I'm not for one moment taking sides in the Civil War (aka The War of Northern Aggression). I'm from Australia and although I have great regard for Abraham Lincoln, I'll leave discussion of the War itself up to you.Ā
This is a love poem, about a soldier whose left his 'maiden' at home, hoping against all hope she wouldĀ still be there on his return.Ā
