The mood of letters

Up the stairs
and through the door
and tucked away under the drawer –
the mood of letters spoke
A revelation
shared with them alone
in older days (before home phones) –
the mood of letters woke
Over time the
mood would change –
pages yellow (rearranged) –
but one thing stayed the same
Years later I’d
come back to see
the house – the furnishings (complete) –
under sheets that bore their name
But of all the things
that made me yearn
the letters’ mood would make me turn
to thoughts of yesteryear
I opened one –
be careful now
it said; honey, soon I’ll be in town –
I wiped away a tear
I could see him
resting on the train
bunkered down – there he’d remain
until he saw her face
One night – just sitting
he’d confess;
I love you honey – she said ‘yes’
she was his saving grace
The letters’ mood
(with time) would change from there –
infatuation – romance – love and care
together they were one
Up the stairs
and through the door
and tucked away under the drawer
of a loving son.
