HOLDING MY BREATH

HOLDING MY BREATH

I thought if I close my eyes tightly
Maybe I'd disappear
If I hold my breath, be silent
Maybe then, he won't come near
I lived in a state of panic
My heart was filled with dread
I heard his footsteps coming
I held my breath from under a bed
My heart was beating loudly
My lungs screamed for air
I couldn't move, I couldn't breathe
He would know that I was there

I still find that I'm holding my breath
Though most times, I'm not aware
I can't relax or give it a rest
It's like I'm worried; He's still there!
Instead of holding in my breath
I try to stay in the moment now
Be mindful of living, breathing
Overcome my fears somehow
I finally learned to exhale
To release my breath into the air
Inhale, enjoy some living
And stop holding my breath like he's still there
