How Now Brown Crown
How now brown crown
royal toil of your ink and flesh
mixed
multiracial mesh on paper
paper-trails never found your feet
how sweet to be a starving artist
carving all this
meat of art
so smart to part
with your worth
and not the curse
I see of late
where artists sell their soul
for a chicken dinner plate.
I salute you,
Maya and Langston
and Zora and Franklin,
and James and even the slain Christ.
These are the poets that gave me LIFE.

*Hugs* to you, Christopher. You are a kind and discerning spirit. This is, indeed, a freestyle and I just flowed with my creative impulses to present a certain rawness for famous poets of color long gone. My references include: Maya Angelou; Langston Hughes; Zora Neale Hurston; Franklin Marshall Davis; and James Baldwin. Thank you. Glad to be in community with you and other creatives.
such a good poem, Nikki....thanks for the Ā heads up on those other poets; looking forward to reading them...cheers
Cheers! Peace and Blessings! Thanks again!
