Insomnia’s Blessing

Insomnia’s Blessing

I’m one of those people you hear about, Doctors call us insomniacs;
Sleeping for just a few hours, then awake, sharp as a tack!
They tell their patients it’s a disorder, and give them drugs to sleep;
But for me it is a blessing, their opinions they can keep!

.
For in the wee hours of the morning, my mind is at it’s peak;
No one around to bother me, only to myself have I to speak!
I do my food preps in the kitchen, for the daily bill of fare;
As I listen to New Age sounds of music, that permeate the air!

.
Then I sit down at the table, and pick up my favorite pen;
To create some words of poetry, my thoughts really kick in then!
The soft notes are so inspiring, they take me to places far away;
I write for many hours, before I know, it’s day!

.
I feel so very happy, to eschew sleep for poetry;
I can rest a little later, if it is tired that I be!
I thank God for my insomnia, for it keeps me wide awake;
Instead of sleeping a third of my life away, this “disorder” I’ll always take!

.
                                  Sleeps’ deprivation
                                Is my true affirmation
                                  That I’m still alive

.
Inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci who only slept three hours a night.

My Dear Gayle,

If you ever get lonely in the middle of the night, just give me a hoot!

I know someone quite well who is just like you. He is most active and very productive during the wee hours....He would never take a nap during the day and hardly take time to rest.... Sometimes I get scared he might breakdown....I don't see that as a disorder but a blessing....Lovely piece Sweet Daddio

Love you

My Dear Sweet Rose,

I must admit that I allow my body to rest when it wants to, never denying it sleep.  If I get tired in the middle of the day, which I often do because of the frantic pace that I keep, I have the luxury of being able to close my eyes whenever I want.  Sometimes, even in the wee hours of the morning, if I am writing and get a little tired, I grab a catnap.  I believe in letting your body be the governor of your sleep patterns.

Love you too,
Daddio xxx

"With insomnia, nothing is real. Everything is far away. Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy." Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk.

I've been having insomnia for more than 12 years. And for some reason even though I'm awake during mornings I tend to work best after midnight. Brilliant write, Larry. We can explain away anything if we want to... ;)

My Dear Friend Lost,

Great minds think alike.  Our creative talents are best served in the wee hours of the morning.  I have a term I use to describe people like us; I call us the Zombie Crew, creatures of the night, but instead of taking life, we give it.  As usual, great quote from you from the Fight Club.

Peace and Love,

Ok now I know how you come up with so many amazing poems.  This is your secret.

My Dear Shirley,

I am answering your lovely response with a Haiku, using an old television show, to illustrate your use of the word "secret", but fortunately for you, one that was aired long before your time.

I've got a secret
My favorite TV show
Most too young to know

Hugs, Peace and Love,

To tell the truth
A show on TV
My tongue is older than my teeth
My Mom used to say to me

Lol you out did me. Couldn't come up with a Haiku like you

I'd be lying if I said I never watched it
My fingers would be crossed
This contest you have said I beat you in
I think I really lost

Hi Larry I can relate to this poem all too well although I'm not productive at all when tired, I struggle to sleep (without alcohol or sleepers) and have to be up at 4 am for my job. Excellent poem by the way

Hi Syd,

I used to be a gigolo, and "had to be up at 4 am for my job" too. Ha, Ha!!  The bottle of wine I drink a day (love red, but the acid upsets my stomach, so I have to do white) relaxes me just fine.  Glad you could relate to this one.

Peace and Love,
Larry xxx
