Jamaica

Jamaica

Ā
Ā
InĀ Jamaican
grey sky, over blue mountain
NoĀ situation!
Ā  my seaĀ foot getting too softĀ
Ā  Ā resting onĀ theĀ whiteĀ sandĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
Ā  Ā the morning rain
Ā onlyĀ come toĀ feedĀ Ā Ā Ā
Ā purpleĀ floraĀ
Ā ripen the coffeeĀ  Ā  Ā Ā
and sweeten the breadfruitsĀ
NoĀ situation!
sun already getting hotĀ Ā Ā
noĀ crosses toĀ bearĀ Ā
Ā smile, that postcardĀ smile
and have another Shanty
Ā jerkĀ chicken's onĀ theĀ fire
Ā cool breezes down by Dunn'sĀ RiverĀ Ā
Ā tonight we'll be immortalsĀ Ā Ā  Ā Ā
Ā dancing like Ninjas
eating bananaĀ chipsĀ  Ā
Ā drinking Red Stripe beer,
Ā  feeling nice with the stars and cricketsĀ
Ā No situation!

Just loving this Christopher! It brings back wonderful memories for me of Jamaica- I got married thereĀ  and the day after our wedding we climbed Dunn River falls- it was beyond memorable- jerk chicken and banana chips washed down with dragon beer and then watching Miko Blanco limbo over fire- you have captured it all so brilliantly- loving the imagery and being transported back by the power of your descriptive words! Thank youĀ  so much for sharing xx

T, I'm mostly 'here' my friend, I check in as often as I can, but, yes, I don't post much poetry on here anymore, maybe I've spread myself too thin, I'm on two other sites, but honestly I haven't posted much on those either, I think I've gotten bored of writing poetry, for the most part, I've started a few but I didn't really like them enough to post, been a weird summer, what can I say....I take it you've been to Jamaica, I really like it there, but most people like the 'resort' thing, no; pretty easy sell, lol....ganga? not so much, but I had my fill of Red Stripe and rum and coke, good times.... thanks for saying all those good things; I often feel like it's a different person you are talking about when you comment on my work, maybe I was in a trance when I wrote it, who knows, lol....stay cool, my brother, hugs

My Dear Brother Poet Chris,

I feel so very cool now mon
Sitting by the fire bon
I'm way up on the mountain top
Six thousand feet, the measured drop

.
I don't go down to the cities mon
For many bad men carry gon
Me stay here, where my life is good
Don't go near dem bad neighborhoods

.
Hi Chris,
It's been too long.
Over thirty years ago, I became friends with a Jamaican man named Kenny.Ā  He was the night clerk at a little motel I stayed for extended periods at, in North Miami Beach.Ā  He loved to play basketball, and I had a brand new pair of Reeboks that I had never used.Ā  I decided to give them to him, for I knew he would treasure them.Ā  From that day on, he treated me like a brother.Ā  Being the insomniac that I am, I would often go down and talk with him in the middle of the night.Ā  He said, that someday, he would like to take me to the Jamaica that few hear about, and meet his people, who live high atop the mountain, and never come down.Ā  I talk about them in this poem.

Sending my love,
Larry xxx

hey Larry, love your poem and story as well, my friend, yes I know the mountain you speak of, it must be Blue Mountain, I was right at the top, very nice and cool up there, mon,Ā  children walk to and from school miles away, down by the river, it sis something to see, quite a lifestyle up there, and apparently up in this mountain grows the best coffee in the world, from a first hand experience I can say that it is really good coffee, thanks for comment my friend, good hearing from you, cheers poet, hugs

Hi Chris,

So very interesting that you actually visited one of the places that I have dreamt of going to.Ā  I had forgotten about it being the site of the world's best coffee.Ā  I'm sorry that I never got to take that trip with my Jamaican friend, Kenny.Ā

Great to be in contact again.

Peace, Love and Hugs,
Larry xxx

hey Larry,
yes it is quite a nice place, with the cool rivers and breathtaking views and it is colder than the rest of Jamaica.Ā  I generally don't like heights but I did enjoy there.Ā  You should go my friend, there are daily tours heading up there.Ā  I do regret not buying some coffee when up there, even though I had budgeted for it, ah well, I suppose next time, you see we all have certain regrets, that are fixable D, be well palĀ

Hi Chris,

Thirty some years ago, when I knew Kenny, there were no tours up the mountain, and people rarely saw it's inhabitants.Ā  Sounds like, although beautiful, it has become commercialized.

All my best,
Larry xxx

hey Larry,
not really, my friend, it's a hard place to get to, very dangerous roads, maybe that's the beauty of the place, even if they wanted to commercialize it, they couldn't.Ā  Ā I'm sure one of those hotel chains would love to build a resort up there, but no way, just a lazy tour bus is all they have right now.Ā  Ā I did speak to a few people about how it was 30 years ago or 50 even, and not much has changed except the road improved a bit, back then it was a climb up the mountain that the locals speak fondly of.Ā  It wasn'tĀ  popular with too many tourists; over five thousand feet.Ā  Ā I think you should think about it Larry, I hate heights and found it a blast.Ā

Ā Have a good one, brother poetĀ  Ā
