The Light

Deep down in the dark,
A hole in the center of your soul
Grows ever more while you're trapped.
Trapped by the thoughts and the doubts
Tumbling in the black pit of your broken heart.
A single bright beam of light
Shines in from above.
Hope fills your darkened consciousness.
The broken body that kneels on the ground
Rises to accept the warmth.
Slender pale fingers reach forward
Grasping for the fantastic light.
Inches away from the enticing brightness
The gnarled hand pauses.
The hope that you held onto has vanished.
Looking towards the light,
That seemingly inviting warmth and friendliness,
You see your hope fly away.
Kneeling on the floor once more
Your broken body lies waiting.
Ready for another ray of light.
Another ray of lies.
You tell yourself to ignore it when it comes,
But you know you can't resist the warmth.
The love you feel in the ray of brilliance.
Is that really worth getting your hopes stolen
And your slowly mending heart destroyed?
Think next time it comes.
Consider the consequences.
I sit there in the dark
My naked knees bruise on the frozen ground.
The golden light burst out into the cavity in my heart,
Into the cage I built for myself.
It looks so lovely, the light,
As it soaks each dark corner with its pureness.
Filling my heart with light,
It also fills it with hope.
Smiling, I reach out and once again embrace the light
